I am so happy that the information about this AMAZING establishment was shared with me. I has my first experience today and it WILL not be the last. From the greeting from Mrs. Kam and the entire staff to the contact with Jordan and her advising me of what she was Doot as she washed my hair, she even told me my scalp was healthy and I had NEVER been told that b4. Then my finishing experience with Kam and Candance. I am still in awe of my day at Shabazz oh and I can’t leave out my conversation with Mrs.Shabazz 🙌 this was an encounter I won’t forget and have found me a stylist in Candance 🤩

This is a review for Shabazz Styling College, not the actual barber shop.
If you don’t want to read about my experience, here’s the cliff notes. This is a school designed for people who already know how to cut hair and are only going to get their hours so they can actually have a license to cut. There is no curriculum, there is no structured teaching and the owner/instructor is hardly ever there. She will gladly show up to take your money at the end of every month, but will not be there on a daily basis to instruct you.
My Experience: The cost of enrollment February 2023 was $12,500 for 1500 hours or 9 months if you attend full time. I was in the position to where I could afford to go full time so I chose it. Tuesday - Friday 9-5 and Saturday 7-4. I asked Ms. Shabazz if there was a discount for paying in full and she said she could knock it down to $11,000. I paid the funds in full via a certified check the end of January 2023 and my first day of class was February 7th.
The first few days were great. I was there at 9 am and so was she, but it slowly started to change. Some days she would show up at 11 or 12 and other days she wouldn’t show up at all. I spent most of my initial days with the secretary just talking. After a couple weeks I had a conversation with Ms. Shabazz and she stated that she would do better….She never did. After a couple months I cut my hours back and got a part time job because I was showing up to class and she was never there. Every time we’d have a discussion about it, she would do better for a few days and then go right back to not showing up. I should’ve cut my losses and asked for my money back then, but I wanted to learn how to cut and her “school” was the only place where the hours worked for my life. The other black owned barber school in town at the time only offered part time night hours.
There was a point from June to July where I didn’t see her at all. I later found out that she had taken a cruise and other vacation and was working full time at her job as an insurance sales person. During this time her son “took over” the class. I say it that way because he is a licensed barber, but he is not a licensed instructor. So I spent most of my days just watching him cut his client’s hair and talking to the secretary. I rarely, if any, got any practice on an actual person.
At the beginning of August I randomly decided to call state board to check my hours. By this time I should’ve had close to 750 hours, but I was informed that I only had 421. Not only was she not showing up to class, she wasn’t submitting my hours to state board either. It was at this time that I decided to quit the class and get my money back. After several back and forth phone calls, excuses and her threatening me with a forged contract, she said that she would give me my money back. We agreed on a figure and she stated she would give it back by the end of September. It’s now March 2024 and I just got all of my funds back after having to get a lawyer and threaten to sue. (She was also able to somehow submit 320 hours to state board in a 30 day period to get my total hours to 721.)
Her reasons for not showing up:
Ms. Shabazz tragically lost a son some years back. She informed me on several occasions that this was the reason that she was unable to actually be present and teach the class. As a parent, I can’t image what that must feel like. She informed me that he was actually the instructor before she took over. But knowing this, she still willingly took my money and the money of countless other students knowing that her grief would be too much for her to fulfill her promise of teaching on a daily basis.
I do not recommend attending this “school.” She’ll show up at first and then she’ll slowly disappear. Hopefully by now she’s allowed someone more qualified to instruct the class.
