We are so lucky to have such a dedicated group of people who care about the community and strive to teach the principles and practices of non-violence. In these times of struggle and isolation, they are there to offer help to those who have suffered some form of violence and to address potentially violent situations with non violent solutions. I attended a candlelight vigil there last night to honor RI'ers who have lost their lives to violence during National Crime Victims Rights week. It was a beautiful ceremony and surrounded those in attendance with a strong sense of community. The Institute for the Study & Practice of Nonviolence does such important work in the local community and beyond. Their trainers in MLK's ideas about nonviolence reach out to so many communities. Especially important is their training of ex-gang members and ex-gang leaders, many of whom become Street Workers. The Institute also supports the families of victims of violence, works in the schools, and more. This one organization has been instrumental in reducing the violence in our state. What could be more important!
