I was apprehensive that the water heater issue could be complicated, but they found a bad valve and repaired it in about an hour. One week later and everything is still running well with no sign of any leaking or other difficulties.
After a few times of observing our system backing up, the plumber found that the sewage line was getting invaded by a tree root. He was able to clear the line very well in 2 hours with a hydro jetting method. The resolution looks comprehensive, but I will keep an eye on it to see if any follow-up is needed.
