My 7 year old joined for about a month. We didn’t even finish the month because the dojos were not nice. In the beginning they were okay, they welcomed him and introduced him to karate because it was his first time ever doing it. After 3 weeks they were screaming at him and being rough with him when he didn’t catch on to certain moves. He’s 7. They were grabbing and ripping his arms into position and didn’t have any patience.
The last straw was when I saw the man lightly smack my kid in the face and roughly place his arms in the position they needed to be in.
My son really tried, some kids don’t catch on right away and overall I felt they didn’t have the patience.
The only reason I’m giving them 2 stars is because their prices are low. They specifically said they “don’t do it for the money” which is why they have low prices. But they do not have compassion or patience for a young child just starting out in karate.
I’m sure others have good experiences here but ours was not.

Very traditional school, teaching a traditional art not some made up mumbo-jumbo. My daughter attends here and has grown leaps and bounds. All the instructors are highly professional and friendly. The dojo is very family oriented.

West End Dojo is the best martial arts school around! All of the instructors are highly skilled, knowledgeable, and care about the students. I highly recommend them.

I've been training at West End Dojo for about 7 years. Most of those years were when I was a child. I was welcomed back by my childhood role models, and the entire dojo family, with open arms two years ago when I decided to join with my 6-year-old son. West End Dojo teaches Koei Kan Karate, a traditional Japanese martial art. Besides the obvious health benefits of living an active lifestyle, you will learn many other traditional aspects of the art. You will also become part of a family that pushes you to do better and to train harder every class. It's an amazing experience to be able to workout with my son, while we learn vital life lessons and techniques that we may need one day. I'm very thankful for my dojo family - they all have helped us become stronger, healthier people both physically and mentally.

If you are looking to learn karate in a more traditional way, this is your place! This dojo is ran by some pretty awesome sensei's that love to teach their style. Koei Kan has some great roots linked to Japan and strives to maintain the traditional aspect. They offer Kids classes ( which is always a riot to watch them fight ). Adult classes are personal and sweat inducing :) Other schools will give you the belt promotions you desire, but when it comes down to it, a belt doesn't prove you are better then another person. You definitely earn your ranking. I trust my skills that I've learned at Koei Kan to protect and defend my self and I cant wait to take part in the Koei Kan Tai Kai!
