Life-savers! This relates to an experience we had in late July 2024, but circumstances outside of my control prevented me from giving it the attention it deserved, until now.
We were returning to Ottawa/Gatineau from seeing relatives in Perth, ON, when a worrisome thunking sound took us off the road. The sound had been getting louder and was sending vibrations we could feel throughout the vehicle. It's purely by chance that we pulled into Beckwith Auto, as the nearest place open at the time, but I'm sure glad we did.
We were met by Al and Greg. When I told them I was coming in with car trouble off the highway, they told me up front that their docket was full for two weeks. They nevertheless agreed to assess my problem and tell me whether or not I was safe to get back on the road and have my car repaired later. I was driving with my family -- my wife, our four-year-old son, and dog, and I didn't want to risk it if the car wasn't road-worthy. That wheel really didn't sound good.
Shortly after bringing the car up on the rig, Greg told me quite seriously that there was no way I was getting back on the road. It turns out that a shoddy repair to the front driver's side wheel bearings a few days earlier (at a large hardware and automotive chain that shall remain nameless) had left the steering knuckle loose, consequently re-damaging the bearings and running the risk of having the assembly come apart at highway speeds.
The repair was simple enough, but crucial. Al and Greg, huge-hearted and honest family men themselves, agreed to take us on as an emergency repair at the front of the queue, as long as we could leave our car overnight. We did so, gladly, and called our relatives in Perth to come pick us up. Even if we hadn't had a place to stay, Al and Greg would have been prepared to arrange something for us in Carleton Place.
True to their word, they got the repair done in record time and we got a call the next morning that everything was road-worthy. I got a ride back to Beckwith Auto, picked up my repaired vehicle, and I was on my way. The bill was astonishingly small (smaller than that of the initial botched repair that landed me in this situation to begin with), and when I offered Al a tip to thank him for his troubles, it took a world of effort to get him to overcome his modesty and accept it! No extra charges for the unexpected work, for displacing the queue, or for the last-minute service. These honest and caring tradesmen, skilled at their craft and proud of their work, were just doing their best to help out a fellow person in need.
To be honest, they quite possibly saved our lives that day. By the way our situation was deteriorating rapidly, we could have ended up a smear on the highway if not for their honest assessment and quick intervention. Al and Greg's compassion was pivotal that day, and I shall remain forever grateful to them.
I have nothing but praise for Al and Greg and the whole team at Beckwith Auto, for their honesty, kindness, compassion, and unfailing courtesy, and for their skill, expertise, and efficiency. I can safely say that I have never had better (or more meaningful) service anywhere, at any time. Thank you.
