From Bernie's Barber Shop
Bernie’s Barber Shop was originally established in 1959 on lower Broadway in Schenectady by Bernie Viscusi, my Grandfather. Bernie began his career as a barber while he was living in Squille, Italy. He was only 13 when he learned the trade, and he opened his own shop at age 16. In a small village of people, there was only one barber shop and it belonged to him. Growing up, Bernie was not just a Grandfather but a father figure as well. After high school, it was clear college was not for me. I needed direction and Bernie was confident I could follow in his footsteps. I enrolled in barber school in 2010. After school, I would go watch Bernie cut hair and help out at the shop, and it was at this time I knew this would become my career.
