Wow … so delighted I found this school. Even though I have been dancing on one for a while, I took level 1&2 classes of salsa and bachata and learned the fundamentals really solid. Fantastic teachers, lots of classes to choose from and excellent studios!

I would recommend Piel Canela to anyone wanting to learn how to dance or improve in specific styles.I think it is one of the top level school and as I have been trying to learn bachata for a while now in different schools in different cities I have seen my dancing skills skyrocket in the first six week course.Not only do they teach you how to dance, but they also provide you with a lot of informations about the dance and music's histories. They don't teach just to teach. They make sure you understand how to get your body moving properly and you get the moves right by repeating them over and over. I have never improved so much.They also have social events where you can practice your dance moves.And the atmosphere is family-like: everyone feels welcome and immediately comfortable.

Chose Not to Renew My Membership, but Piel Canela Continued to Charge My Account for 2 Additional MonthsPros:-Central Location - Classes are held on 34th and 8th ave., so it’s easy to get if you’re commuting from the outer boroughs-Close to Public Transportation - The 8th Ave Metro will drop you off on the same block-Kenyie Del Rosario - Wonderful instructor! She uses props in class to help you understand dance concepts. I highly recommend anyone take her class only.Cons:-Doesn’t Own a Dance Studio - Piel Canela does not own a dance studio; they rent space from Pearl Studios to hold their classes. As a result, there are a host of problem stemming from this.Class Cancellations: My classes were cancelled because of human error. Staff at Pearl Studios sometimes double booked rooms and my classes were cancelled. Other times Piel Canela just didn’t get a room. If another company books a room and there isn’t enough space, your class will get booted After being enrolled for two months, eight of my classes were cancelled.-Last Second Cancellations - Literally last second cancellations! After work, I commuted from the Bronx into Manhattan (1 hr commute) just to learn my 6:30 class got cancelled. It would be really helpful if the administrators at Piel Canela gave us notice ahead of time. Since Piel doesn’t own or control the dance spaces, they have no idea if they classes will go as planned.-Long Elevator Wait - Because Pearl Studios rents rooms to other organizations, there are tons of students/organization waiting to board the elevators - there are only 2 elevator lifts. There is a bottleneck at the elevator bank during peak times: 6:15 pm - 6:30 pm and 8 pm - 8:15 pm. Sometimes I waited for 10 minutes and walking 12 flights of stairs wasn’t an option.-Instructors Late to Class - Some instructors routinely showed up late for my 6:30 pm classes...maybe because of the long elevator lines or maybe because they’re unprofessional. Either way, I paid for a 1:30 minute class, and should have received 1:30 minute class.- Director Upsells Too Much - If possible avoid the Joe B, the director at Piel Canela. He spends 15 minutes trying to upsell you with cheesy marketing tactics and corny jokes.Overcrowded Classes the Last 30 minutes - Classes at Piel Canela are staggered; some classes are 1 hour and others are an 1 hour and 30 minutes. The problem here is you will get new students entering your class the last 30 minutes. The newly entered students, will not know the day’s pattern and will messed up the rotation order. Would be really helpful if the instructor would separate the late comers. In addition, some rooms are Pearl are small without window so expect to be shoulder-to-shoulder with other students.-Doesn't Respond to Phone Calls or Emails - I decided not to renew my membership after two months, yet I continued to get charged. They never responded to my emails or phone calls until I showed up in person.If you’re going to invest your money into a dance school, choose one that has its own studio, where they can control the environment.-Don’t Recommend Piel Canela.
