You can go to bigger gyms, grunt along in a random fashion and probably do yourself good if you don't hurt yourself. But if you're out of shape and looking to whip yourself into shape (ahem, hello), this is a good place to do it. Small, friendly and never overcrowded, this place is where you go to work one on one with a smart trainer (Michelle De Dominicis! but there are others who appear to know their stuff, too) and get in shape without throwing out your back or spraining a muscle. Plenty of rowers, ellipticals and treadmills for warmups and a good circuit of machines and weights...everything you need and nothing you don't. Uptown parking is still intensely stupid (yay Kingston.), but consider that walk up the hill or up the stairs part of your cardio warmup.

Signature Fitness Review: I have used John Perry as a personal trainer for many years and have also referred many clients to him from my psychotherapy practice. John creates a safe and warm environment, personalizing training sessions based on the needs of the individual. There is ample medical evidence that weekly training sessions that combine cardio with weight training can boost the immune system, enhance mood and memory and help prevent the numerous physical issues that stress and/or aging can bring. John has worked with numerous adolescent boys from my practice, many of whom struggled with neurological issues such as Aspergers Syndrome. In each case his work helped these boys with confidence, social skill development and cognitive enhancement, grounding them in their own bodies as he helped them better articulate themselves both physically and verbally. He intuitively understood their individual needs and addressed these with a mixture of discipline and humor. John and his gym are a great boon to the area.
