“I just had a moment that brought back a life-changing memory, and I felt compelled to share this.

I took defensive driving at Shore Driving School in South Ozone Park, NY back in the late 90s/early 2000s. I still remember one lesson from my instructor to this day: on ice, do NOT slam the brakes and do NOT overcorrect the steering wheel stay calm, hold steady, and let the car regain control.

Years later, I found myself driving on an icy highway bridge on the way to a church event. My car started to slide, and in that split second, that instructor’s voice came right back to me. I followed exactly what I had been taught and it absolutely saved my life and the lives of others in the car.

To this day, I am deeply grateful for that training and that instructor’s patience and wisdom. That lesson didn’t just teach me how to drive it taught me how to survive a terrifying moment on the road.
