Gone. Unlike the other poster on this, I was notified in mid May, that it would be closing and not reopening. Truly hoping someone else will put a gym here. Yes, it was dirty. I lived around there so taking a shower there was not necessary, thank heavens, it was disgusting. The whole bathroom really. The machines were dusty, mirrors needed cleaning, out of the 30 tv’s on machines maybe 5 worked. Other Retros has better equipment, way cleaner, staff that did stuff. The drinks bar was all sugary powders, no fresh fruit at all. The music was like radio hits of the late 2000’s, so I guess that part was retro...? Hell, I met the owner once when I joined in ‘12, the dude was at least 300 lbs. He asked when I joined if I wanted him to write me a workout plan. I politely declined. All of these things wrong, and yet...it was the best gym I’ve ever membered in. Planet Fitness was like working out in a bad commercial. NY Sports Club was great til I moved and they doubled my payment in the new area. I had one close on me. The Secaucus Retro was just a place to work out where everyone pretty much left you alone. Everyone that went was always respectful for the most part, and even though the staff really didn’t seem to be doing much of anything, they were always nice (there used to be an older guy who would clean, and when he left everybody seem to have stopped). The best /best/ thing was that there were certain midday hours you could go and there would be maybe 4-6 other people there; and it wasn’t a “once in a while” sort of thing, it was every day. It was like having your own gym to yourself. Then...we’ll, Covid, and you know. It was a messy broken gym that many felt it really needed someone to care...but that neglect made it special. It was MY gym. I will miss you Secaucus Retro.
Gym is in bad shape and locker rooms are rarely clean. Equipment is in bad shape and the owner likely hasn’t put any money into the place in years. This might be the reason why it isn’t to busy which is what I like most about the place.
Place is clean and there are enough machines...but earlier comment is correct that gym staff doesn't care...way more into their phones or friends than patrons..worst of all is they allow folks to routinely drop weights, which crash like boulders onto the ground. Very disturbing to the whole gym. I once asked a staff member to address it and she shrugged me off.
