After 26 years of training in the Washington suburbs, this aging martial artist moved to Durham. I found my new martial arts family at Shaw's Karate. Mr. Yuri Powell bought the business from Master Shaw a few years ago. He's an outstanding instructor. Skilled in the martial arts. And runs a family-oriented business where moms, dads, sons, and daughters train together. I've been attending this dojo for about 8 months, regulary 2-3 times a week. The structure, the discipline, the expertise of the sensei, and the community of the students is all exceptional and really enjoyable. Also the price per student is incredibly reasonable and less than most crossfit gyms per month. I love attending class and learning and feel myself getting stronger and more confident in my skills every day. Mr. Shaw and Mr. Powell offer classes for every age and level and are always willing to give extra instruction when you ask. Love going to the dojo, it's always fun!

Been taking my kids (7 and 9) there for a couple of weeks and Mr. Shaw is great with the kids. Definitely a good dose of discipline for them and they're actually working out and stretching on their own. Prices are really reasonable and Mr Shaw is great himself.I have to cover my mouth because I laugh so much at how he corrects the kids in a slightly silly but serious way. All about their well being.Think I'll take a couple of classes myself.
