While karate is the foundation of Ligo Dojo, Ligo sensei’s study of Hoshokai has introduced multiple other forms of Japanese martial art that precede modern karate. We not only study these arts, but we do so with the Japanese masters whose lineage dates back hundreds of years. It’s an incredible experience that only exists here in Chapel Hill!

Chapel Hill Hoshokai is a unique place to learn traditional Japanese weapons techniques. The dojo offers training with a variety of weapons, including the Japanese sword, sai, bo, jo, tanjo, boken, and tonfa. Sensei Ligo brings these teachings directly from masters in Japan, preserving the authenticity and depth of the art.

For me, Hoshokai has been a perfect complement to my karate practice. The weapons training deepens my understanding of martial arts traditions and philosophy, while also teaching me valuable skills in maintaining safe distance, moving smoothly, and staying focused. As a member of the budo club, the trainings have immensely improved my karate technique. It’s extremely helpful to see and understand the application of many techniques. I’ve loved learning how to use traditional weapons, and you can’t find this kind of semi private training anywhere else!
