I found myself back in Chapel Hill after being diagnosed with ME/CFS, or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, an extremely debilitating neuro-autoimmune disease. I was unable to do more than shower in a day. Any kind of activity, whether physical, mental, or emotional, would leave me completely drained, and unable to recover. I saw all kinds of doctors and specialists- the best in the world (including a famous clinic in the Bay Area), and no one could help me. The prognosis for ME/CFS is horrible. Only 5% of patients ever recover and I was beginning to resign myself to the reality of being disabled for the rest of my life. I was somewhat skeptical of acupuncture because I had seen another practitioner who hadn't been able to help me, and the only clinical data available was its efficacy for pain management. Carmela has totally converted me. Over the course of a year and a half, she has literally given my my life back. Every time I am in a yoga class, or out with friends, or now working again- all activities I was physically unable to perform when I first became her patient- I credit Carmela. It has not been an easy or quick healing process, nor would I expect it to be, but Carmela has been there for me every twist and turn. Not only is she extremely intelligent in her practice and constantly learning more and expanding her knowledge scientifically, she is exceptionally intuitive and knows exactly where and how one's body is out of balance. Carmela has been able to figure out the root causes of symptoms seemingly completely unrelated from their origins. Over the year and a half course I have been seeing her, I have come to understand that she is gifted in so many areas and methodologies of treatment, and able to apply them as necessary.
