First time customer when in got a hair cut it turned out alright. Not a good vibe there. Didn’t see any price on the website. Felt got overcharged. Well, will also be my last time there.

Walked in on Thursday 6/12 and there was only one gal working who was fully booked, so the nice front desk person booked me for today 6/13. I came back today at 3:20 for my 3:30 appointment to find two folks working. I waited 50 minutes with no haircut, as 3 people who also had appointments with named folks got priority, even though they arrived after me. Such a bummer to be completely ignored as I’ve been coming here for 6 years and getting great service.

I've been going here for a couple months now and I see Melissa. She absolutely rocks!
I get (a shampoo and) French braids and they always look great!

I’ve been coming to this Fantastic Sam’s off and on for over 10 years. Yesterday I went in for a haircut and eyebrow wax, just some maintenance since I haven’t gotten a trim in awhile… Shay was my stylist, and it’s been AGES since I had a stylist I both clicked with AND did a fantastic job on my hair.

Shay, if you’re reading this - thank you! You were so kind and also so informative when you showed me how to use the round brush. I should have asked for your number because I’d follow you to the ends of the earth for a trim. You somehow made a middle part work on me (how? did you sell your soul to fix bad cowlicks in the front? I’ve never had someone fix my part), and for the first time in years I left excited to style my hair on my own again. Thank you!

I have fine, thin, short hair so my haircuts go pretty quick. The woman cutting my hair said when she started cutting that we could go shorter but to give her a minute to start. A couple minutes later, I said “Can we go just a little shorter, please?” She said, “Well that would be a whole other haircut so I will have to charge you double.” I have never been so shocked and confused during a hair appointment in my life. Why tell me we can go shorter in a minute only to tell me that I will be charged $30 extra dollars to do so? I went straight to another salon after because not only was is not what I wanted length-wise but it was just a bad cut - a bob that sagged downward in the back despite me saying I wanted it angled shorter in the back and longer towards my face. I used to love this location but I’m sad to say that this appointment scared me off.

I've been here every few weeks for 3 years. The stylists and hostesses are great. They deserve 5 stars. Cherie, Melissa, Zoe, and Savannah especially. But here's why I would give management and owners zero stars and the biggest lump of coal ever; and why id be prepared for a cluster headache trying to get in:

The place has chronically been understaffed (for 3 continuous years) and the results show up as stress on the employees that are actually there, and on the depressed face of your customers. This place has given me permanent anxiety even thinking about trying to get a haircut. The number of times I tried to do a walk in, or even call ahead and get in line only to be told they couldn't see me for several hours or until the next day is horrifying. It's too numerous to count. Their track record of this is solid for 3 years. They may get better for 2 months but then are back to being horrifying for 8 months.

It's obvious that owners care more about the accounting than giving customers a great experience. The thing is...no matter what they do with the accounting they're destined to fail if they keep giving customer and customer such a painful experience. People can't wait for hours, can't revolve their day around a haircut, and if you force them into a time or day that doesn't work well for them you'll find they leave, don't show, and you lose them as a customer.

Having extra capacity on hand is far better than some of your best customers never being able to get a haircut. And it's better than them having to wait for hours. And it's better than burning out the employees that are actually working. This is true even if someone winds up sitting for some of the day.

And if you're having trouble hiring people, this is the simple reality you have to accept: pay them better. And if splitting the tips with an extra person is a issue: simply pay them better and give them benefits.

I hope they fix this, and start taking care of their employees and customers so that the shroud of depression and anxiety and difficulty is lifted from the place. The employees and customers deserve better.

If any part of you values customer service go to the Cedar Lake Road location instead of this one. Unfortunately, the Excelsior location employs some of the rudest people I’ve ever dealt with in my life!

If I could give 0 stars, I would. I went in for a trim and walked out with the most uneven bangs I have ever seen and a bloody ear. I won't go too into detail, because quite frankly, it is pretty gross, but my stylist (an older woman) injured me and gave me what she though were "face framers" but was actually just a chunk of hair that she decided would look good to remove from one side and not the other. It has been over three weeks since this cut and I am still so upset about the experience. Not only was the quality of the cut horrendous, but the conversation about her life was so negative and vulgar, I wanted to leave mid service. I contacted management about everything and they took two weeks to even respond and it was the worst apology I have ever received (if you can even call it that). I sent them photos of my cut and damage to the back of my ear and all they had to say is that they would talk with the stylist, but that she has "been in the industry for years" and that this was the first complaint she has received. I don't care if she invented hair cutting lol I received a terrible service and nothing was done to fix it.
