About URSA Academy - Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu Ann Arbor
URSA Academy - Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu Ann Arbor is a family-owned and operated Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Youth Self Defense & Martial Arts Academy. Led by Kris Magers, a third-degree Black Belt professor and head of the midwest headquarters for the world-renowned "Ribeiro Jiu Jitsu" association, the academy provides the best instruction with proven methods, effective techniques, and practical drilling in a diverse training environment. The academy welcomes men, women, teens, and kids aged 5 and above, offering programs and classes suitable for all ages and ability levels, from beginners to world champions. The atmosphere is positive and supportive, with a strong emphasis on safety and mutual respect. The facility is clean, and the staff is excellent, creating a strong family atmosphere. Students have praised the friendly and understanding staff, along with the welcoming nature of the kids, making it a great environment for newcomers. The "free" fundamentals course is an excellent way to get started, and classes are taught at a steady pace, ensuring students are neither left behind nor overwhelmed. The academy promotes a mutual understanding of safety, with no big egos, and everyone learning together. It is noted that Jiu Jitsu is mandatory, as the skills learned positively impact many aspects of life. While the academy can be pricey and has some limitations on attending open mat sessions from other gyms and wearing approved gi colors, the overall consensus is that it is an excellent place to train. Visitors and locals alike have found it to be a clean facility that prioritizes safety and offers a friendly community to learn valuable skills and release stress in a supportive environment.
