I went while visiting from VA and had a blast! They had so many tropical rares. Picked me up a gorgeous mature Vittarifolium Forgetti cross with new growth and tons of inflows.
I’ve only known about this place for a little over a year now, but I swear it is by far the #1 place in Maryland to get tropical plants! They specialize in uncommon tropical plants and I love it!! They also have a wide selection of cacti, hoyas, and some regular plants. I will forever drive the 57 minute car ride every time! I live in Westminster so I love the fact that it’s only 1 or 2 turns to get there, so it’s a very easy drive with a beautiful scenic view. You’ll know you’re close when you start seeing lots of green trees 🌲 Upon coming to the huge greenhouse facility they have on site, it will look like your turning into just a regular home (with beautiful landscaping) but once you park and walk passed their chickens (which are always so cute) you’ll see 4 XL industrial tunnel greenhouses that they’ve welded together to make the ginormous heaven-like space they hold all their plants in! The one farthest to the end of the driveway, is actually off limits and specifically used as an indoor jungle and pond/waterfall to maintain their amazing temperature and humidity inside! Also when I called a year ago I was explaining my small greenhouse to them and they actually sat on the phone with me for 20 mins explaining how greenhouses work, and what I need to get/do for mine to thrive! They were so kind and not many places will take the time to care for what we tell them and to give feedback was just amazing! I think the only downside I noticed was a lot of the plants I wanted had mealie bugs or spider mites, but when I mentioned it to staff they told me they were going to have someone to and spray right then and there. I still bought the plants I wanted and they are all doing good so far!! Remember: when dealing with plants, it’s not uncommon to deal with the pests they attract. It’s all normal and as long as you know how to treat the pests, they will go away and your plants will be okay! Don’t let a little bug discourage you from buying their newly stocked, amazing plants! They are worth it every time! I will say when I first dealt with plants I didn’t know what I know now about pests, so I am much better equipped to deal with them. When buying a new plant from anywhere, I always quarantine them in a safe place in my home, away from the rest of my collection, so I can safely treat them and eventually put them with the rest of my babies! I also really like that they’ve started to make space there for other sellers like “Cultivate The City” which has some really awesome anthuriums! Plants alive also hosts a yearly plant festival around memorial day(it was on my birthday this year too which was sweet, wahooo!) They also let me bring my stroller inside their greenhouses , that way I can take my children with me when I go plant shopping!
Absolute best place for houseplants in the DMV area! We LOVE to go here to buy houseplants and also to gawk at them! The greenhouse is beautifully set up and it’s so fun to admire all the plants. The staff is welcoming and helpful. Overall, highly recommend Plants Alive! for plant shopping or for a fun place to visit!
