“I was in District Heights, Maryland to visit my sister for her birthday and also to handle some business in the DMV area. My business took longer than I thought and that put me behind schedule from getting to my next stop, my hometown of Flint, Michigan. My plan was to get a haircut there from barber that I have know for years. Now that I was stuck in DC an extra couple days I needed to get a haircut before I arrived at my next stop. One of my cousins told me to call this barbershop and ask for Sean.
I called and he said come now and you are next. I got there and within 15 minutes I was in his chair and he was working away. He was focused, meticulous, methodical, and giving all the attention he could to making sure my haircut was perfect. Toward the end of my haircut, he received a phone call and when he answered the phone, when he answered he said, “Baby we are about to be rich! Because this man is about to pay me a million dollars for this haircut!” I smiled, and then when he turned me towards the mirror….it was in fact a million dollar haircut. “My wife and I have just recently moved to Maryland from Iowa. Before we got here back in late August, I needed a haircut. My wife has needed one since before me. I had an appointment this evening and figured I would go get a haircut after. So, after my appointment, I picked up my wife and we set out to find a barbershop or beauty salon. While we were searching Google, I remembered that there was a barbershop next door to the CVS Pharmacy where we get my wife's meds. I suggested we go there, she agreed, and off we went. When we walked in, we found two gentlemen working the chairs and informed them that we each needed a haircut. There appeared to be a bit of confusion at first, but after a moment or two, each of the barbers chose a customer and we were off. It was not long into this experience before we were all having a good time! The conversation was wonderful as we discussed the move from Iowa, our cat, and how amazingly friendly the people of Maryland are. My wife's barber seemed intent on figuring our why a couple of mid-westerners had moved out to the east coast. There were many small tell-tale signs as to why the initial confusion took place that became more and more evident as the session continued. Our barbers were two wonderful black gentlemen working in a predominantly black county cutting the hair of the first white people upon whom they had ever practiced their craft! For their first run at this, both did a wonderful job! And while they did this, they made two mid-western transplants feel right at home. We have found our barbershop. Not only do I want to continue to support this small, local business, but I really want to return and spend more time with our two new friends.“

“Earlier today, I had an 11:30 appointment with Joey that took an unexpected turn. I inquired about the pricing for my service—facial hair only—and was quoted a price. I then asked if this pricing was listed on the website, and when it wasn’t, Joey responded by suggesting, “Maybe this isn’t the place for you.”

That statement was not only surprising, but also deeply offensive. I had previously vetted this barbershop and had a detailed conversation with a staff member before booking and paying for services. I’ve never had an African-American barber speak to me that way, so to hear it from someone who isn’t was both audacious and extremely inappropriate—especially in a space that should be a sanctuary of professionalism and respect.

I chose to leave Joey’s chair. Thankfully, the gentleman in the first chair and his wife stepped in and connected me with Jimbo, who completely turned my experience around. Their kindness and professionalism made all the difference.“
