I called at 3 am and an electrician, Nick, answered the emergency option (0) and calmly walked me through what I needed to do to assess the blinking lights and smell of burnt plastic. He later came, figured out the problem (transformer outside) and called National grid to fix it, helping the NG repair person (by phone) to find the exact source.Nick walked through the house to determine where the odor was from and what (a burnt out fixture) might have caused it.He looked at the furnace and diagnosed why my heating had also failed, identifying the mechanism (including model no.) that had blown.
