I had a varicose vein in my leg that led to Venous Insufficiency, but like many other people, I had no idea. I had always had that "one" vein that was painful to touch, but thought nothing of it. As the years went on the vein started to cause other underlying problems unbeknownst to me. I started to have swelling in my lower leg, redness, itching, and restless legs at night. I thought for many years it was due to age or that I was standing/sitting too much at work. I resorted to wearing compression socks, which helped a little, but did not fix the problem.
