The handyman said he could fix my creaking floor in 2 rooms and paint the trim for $650 ($250+$250+$150 plus "supply costs”). After I agreed, he put a few nails in one room and then said it wouldn’t work and the new estimate (meaning a new $86 estimate fee, mind you) would be $1600 (plus "supply costs"). Oh, and I still had to pay $250 for the few nails he put in one room. When I said $1600 (which didn't even include the painted trim and would involve tearing down drywall) was too much, I had to pay $250+$18+$86 (nails in room + supply costs + not accepting new estimate). When we met my first impression was, this guy looks like he knows what he's doing. He didn't let his first impression down, that guy knew what he was doing! He was courteous and knowlegable,and efficient! Did the job like he could do it with his eyes closed. It was perfect! Just what I wanted. When he was done, he cleaned up all his mess and it looked like he was never there.
