So twice a year they clean the grounds. Meaning everything near the headstones is removed and thrown out. They send out a letter in the mail as a reminder The past 6 years, we have had a 20lbs statue at my grandmothers grave and it was never moved even during clean up time. This year, no reminder was mailed and everything including the 20lb statue of St Paul holding baby Jesus went missing. Come to find out, the ground keeper takes everything and places it in a random area behind the mausoleum. I was able to find 2 things but the 20 lbs statue is missing. Ground crew swears they placed it there. I don’t think everyone knows about this “staging area” and those who...read full review

Heaven knows what will happen to me for bestowing the ultimate rating on a Catholic cemetery not known for its number of Italian souls in residence, but this particular place is totally deserving. Located almost across the street from Cantigny, Assumption Cemetery seems to be able to push the envelope against Diocesan rules and regs and they do it in a wonderful way. Finally, a Catholic cemetery that exists for those its supposed to exist for: the bereaved. From the lay out of the land, to the congenial and late staying office staff; from the no holds barred personalized and often decorative displays to the deceased, it appears that anything goes, but in a tasteful, joyous way. This type of effigy is rarely seen in some of the more establishment dwellings of the souls, but it really should be. The Mausoleum on the premises is anything but dour: the stained glass is lovely and Assumption encourages families to offer personal touches in the way of photos, candles, baseball hats, veteran dog tags, and then some, Even as you walk through, without knowing a soul, you can tell what the souls are about. Two of my former students are here and their families have said there is no dread stopping in for a visit. There is also a decent sized chapel that is routinely open throughout the day and here again, Assumption goes the distance. If you stop in to pray or to grieve, expect to be kept company; not by dead silence, but by piped in hymns of the Catholic variety. The grounds overall are immaculate. Whether you are coming, going, or staying, AC has nailed it in figuring out that even death is all about the details. Very nice work!
