Ski Magazine rates this resort as the top in the United States and I absolutely agree. This resort in the age of overcrowded, mega resorts with mega passes, has managed to retain the feel of a small town, local ski mountain. Slopes/Terrain: Sun Valley has two ski areas: Dollar and Bald Mountain (“Baldy”). Dollar is smaller and more oriented to beginners while Baldy is the big mountain. Slopes on Baldy are generally steeper than the typical resort and Sun Valley sits at a lower elevation so it can be more finicky with snow quality. Beautiful resort with great lodges and dining. However, I wouldn't recommend this mountain for beginners, whether skiing or snowboarding. The green runs are like blue intermediate runs, and the blue runs are advanced runs. Combine that with hard-packed powder and icy conditions, and this mountain can be challenging. The runs are super long, which is terrific if you've chosen one that's matched to your skill level. Choose wrong and you may be cursing the whole way down. We enjoyed are 3 days skiing here. What you need to know is that this is NOT a mountain for beginners at all. The Green runs are super steep and would be a blue run any where else. We skied from both bases . Warm Springs is further away, but less commotion and you can store your items upstairs in a free cubby. River Run is larger with free storage in bins outside. We also enjoyed eating all the way at the top versus mid mountain. Parking is free at either place. Runs are well marked and nicely groomed.
