I’m writing my review as a parent who spent 5 years at a commercialized karate school. I will start out saying, leaving a commercialized school was the best thing we have done for my son. They tore down my son’s confidence, made him feel like he wasn’t good enough, never worked with him to better his skills. He left as a black belt, but not able to defend himself. It was basically pay your way through & you’ll belt up, no matter what…
Now, let’s get into Master Nelson’s school. We’ve been here just over a month. My son has never been happier. He loves the way they teach. Master Nelson encourages. If my son messes up, he doesn’t shame him for it. He helps & shows. Master Nelson is helping these kids for real world problems. A controlled environment is what he calls it; a safe place. There are no tears or arguing to come here. A month here & my son is able to defend himself, his flexibility has improved, has slimmed up, & he’s just happier. Master Nelson has a passion to actually teach his students. He is in it for the right reasons. If you or your child(ren) want to actually learn martial arts, this is the place to come. Put the time in & you’ll leave a whole new person.

Master Nelson is more than just a Grand Master in Korean American Martial Arts Academy. He is a friend, a helper, and an advocate for kids! Our daughter was having some bullying at school and Master Nelson talked to her one on one about it and let her know he would show up in any school meeting to address her sticking up for herself if it ever happened again! Master Nelson reinforces expectations of who we expect our daughter to be, he holds them accountable for their own actions. We wouldn’t put her anywhere else.

We were really excited about what looked like a great class to attend, advertised as “free,” but in reality you have to buy a uniform just to participate. Our child was excited and ended up disappointed. It felt like a bait and switch, and that’s not cool.

Master Nelson is incredibly passionate about Taekwondo. His extensive background in Kukkiwon Taekwondo (WTA), Hapkido, and several other martial arts makes him a truly well-rounded and highly knowledgeable instructor. He also integrates his medical experience as an RN into his teaching, which adds depth, safety awareness, and a greater appreciation for the art.
He values discipline, tradition, and structure, yet maintains a warm and welcoming environment that is suitable for students of all ages and experience levels. His school is a place where you feel supported, challenged, and inspired to grow.
