I’ve been getting my hair cut by Luis since I moved to Miami from Los Angeles in 2017 to start a job as a professor at FIU. Finding a great barber was one of the first things I set out to do in Miami and I took the task very seriously-I chose Luis from many potential barbers based on the quality of his haircuts on Instagram (follow him @ Luis Mateo). When I got my first haircut from Luis, I knew I’d made the right choice. The quality of Luis’s haircuts is unmatched. He’s cut my hair before every major life event-my first faculty website photo (see below), my wedding (see also below), and before every other personal and professional milestone in the past 9 years. When I was out at a local bar trivia night, I even got compliments on the quality of my haircut from another local barber (“I work at [the barbershop on the next block]. Who cuts your hair? Whoever it is, they’re really good!”).

I’ve gone to see Luis at various locations over the years-I’d follow him anywhere he decided to open up shop-and he even came to my apartment to cut my hair back in 2020 when everything shut down. I couldn’t be happier for Luis and Melissa to open in their new location, in the heart of Coral Gables!

Luis is one of the first people I connected with in Miami and I’m proud to call him not only my barber, but one of my great friends. I used to chat with Luis about being new in town, meeting people (including my wife) at bar trivia, and living the life of a 30-something year old. These days, our conversations are about family and how we both have daughters that will be turning 2 in the next few months. A lot has changed over the years, but some things don’t, like great haircuts and great people.

The last two photos attached to this review are from the haircut I got today, in Coral Gables on just a regular Thursday. If you’re looking for great service from great people with the highest level of skill, then book your appointment, come in, sit down with a cafecito, and get ready for a great experience. He is located on the second floor of the plaza, take the stairs on left side and inside the salon through the double doors and he is on the right. He takes venmo or cash.“
