When my aunt was dying (nine years ago), I decided to also have my mother pre-pay her funeral arrangements. My mother's funeral was held two days ago, and meanwhile I spent a lot of time on the phone three days ago with Joyce's colleague Betsy. As with Mike from nine years ago, Betsy was *very* helpful and pleasant. Also as with my aunt's funeral, Joyce attended my mother's funeral - and again, everything was handled perfectly & sensitively. Joyce is very compassionate, and her colleagues also reflect that.
Nobody likes to use a funeral home, and certainly no one wants to have to review one...but Joyce and the Torchinsky Hebrew Funeral Home went above and beyond when we had to deal with an out-of-state death, transport back to MD, and funeral arrangements. Joyce held my hand throughout the entire ordeal, from communicating with the hospice and funeral home in SC, arranging a flight back to MD, picking up the deceased in the wee hours of the morning at Dulles, arranging a rabbi for the burial, taking care of getting the obituary into the Washington Post, and even expediting the death certificates. She was in constant communication with me every step of the way, keeping me updated on what was going on, and even went to bat for us when the SC funeral home was being somewhat insistent on embalming the deceased (which is against Jewish law and was likely essentially a money-grab by them). And while no one likes to think about costs at a time like this, Joyce at no time tried to upsell or guilt us into purchasing anything above and beyond what was needed for a basic Jewish funeral. She was truly a lifesaver!
My husband passed over a month ago. Joyce Torchinsky and her staff did an outstanding job of handling all arrangements to include cremation, obituary, memorial service , prayer cards etc. Ms. Torchinsky treated my sons and me like family. She was able to explain everything and to walk us through the many decisions. I knew my husband was in good hands which really was a relief in such a trying time. I can’t say enough about the quality of service and the extensive knowledge that Ms. Torchinsky displayed from the day she took over through his memorial service. Job well done.
