The instructors are exceptional, welcoming, and encouraging, maintaining a balance of discipline and effectiveness. The atmosphere is family-like, with a strong sense of community among students and teachers. Colorado Budokan stands out from other martial arts schools, providing a perfect mixture of strength, traditional style, and community. It is a true martial arts institution, highly recommended for those interested in training in the martial arts.
I’ve trained at this dojo for over 20 years, and it continues to be an incredible place to learn. Sensei Tsutsui (plural - as it includes his wife and daughter) along with the other black belts, are outstanding instructors who truly know their art. They’re patient, skilled, and attentive to each student’s needs while encouraging growth. Beyond karate, this dojo offers a true community and life skills that last well beyond the mat.
I’ve had the privilege of training at Colorado Budokan under Sensei Tsutsui for over 20 years, and it’s truly a remarkable experience. Sensei Tsutsui, who was the first American to medal in Japan, brings decades of expertise and a deep passion for traditional karate. The dojo has a warm, family-like atmosphere where both my children trained and now my grown daughter continues to train. It’s a place where you not only learn authentic karate techniques but also build lifelong connections. I wholeheartedly recommend Colorado Budokan to anyone looking to embark on a rewarding martial arts journey.
My kids and I joined Colorado Budokan dojo as something we could do as a family while my husband was deployed, and we stayed active after he came home (safe and sound, thankfully). As my kids aged, they found new things to do; but the physical coordination and mental discipline they learned in karate has helped them succeed in their newest pursuits! I'm still a student, and thoroughly enjoy the community and spirit of our dojo.
