Academy of Motorcycle Operation (AMO) is a CHP-authorized training provider offering a 2-day motorcycle training course. The course covers all 16 hours required by both the CHP and DMV to obtain a license-waiver certificate. AMO's instructors are professionally trained and certified by the CHP. The school provides easy-to-ride motorcycles, helmets, and gloves for students to use during the course. The total cost of the course is $350 for those 21 years of age and older, and $295 for those under 21. No prior riding experience, driver's license, or motorcycle permit is required to enroll. Students only need a valid government-issued ID. The course is designed to be thorough, covering everything from basic controls to shifting, stopping, and turning. Students praise the patient and knowledgeable instructors who provide clear instructions and helpful feedback. Reviews highlight how instructors like Ryan use personal experiences to make lessons engaging and understandable. The course includes both online and in-person sessions, with the driving portion lasting 5 hours each day for two days. AMO's curriculum emphasizes safety, providing students with the knowledge and skills needed to ride confidently and responsibly. The course includes a driving test and a written test, with the opportunity to retake them for free if needed. Many students report feeling confident and capable after completing the program, achieving skills that allow them to ride home from dealerships and on roads shortly after finishing the training. Successful completion of both tests results in a certificate that waives the DMV driving test requirement.

The AMO conducts motorcycle training under the auspices of the California Highway Patrol and issues CA Department of Motor Vehicle printed serialized certificates on behalf of the CA DMV, waiving their on-motorcycle riding test. The course is 15.5 hours, and, besides providing professional and certified trainers, special facility rental and maintenance, and processes to conduct the course, the AMO also provides the motorcycle, helmet and gloves all as part of the enrollment fee.
