“After researching for over a year, I identified 23–26 companies scattered throughout San Diego County. I created a list and checked every company I could find — reviews, licenses, legal issues, ownership, and more. I spent weeks conducting background checks on pretty much every single person involved in those companies.- IT WAS EXHAUSTING but I am glad I did it.
One thing I noticed throughout my research was that a lot of companies are owned by random folks who seem to just hold contractor licenses and subcontract almost 100% of the work, without really having strong construction or project management expertise. I also noticed a few companies with a lot of legal problems, which was scary.
I ended up narrowing it down to five companies, including SnapADU, and my goal was to pick the top three. Cost was important to me, but I had also heard horror stories where contractors built something that was not compliant and the ADU ended up sitting empty. In fact, I saw that happen on my own street. So for me, ethics and reliability mattered just as much as cost.
During construction, there were NO CHANGE ORDERS! That was a big deal for me because it was one of the major problems I saw with other companies. SnapADU does the work up front and flushes out potential issues upstream in the process.
SnapADU seemed different from the beginning. Once I called them, they connected me with someone who was very realistic with my expectations, but also really listened to what I needed. We went back and forth, and he explained the process clearly. The most important piece was the “feasibility study,” which was exactly what I needed to hear. I must’ve sent over 20 emails back and forth asking questions and they always provided clear answers.
They provided a rough estimate before feasibility, but after the feasibility study was completed, things were adjusted, and surprisingly, the price did not change very much. During feasibility, they studied the site, utility connections, zoning, and the whole picture. They had a few experts study the site for a few weeks. VERY IMPRESSIVE!
We went back and forth on a few things, but we finalized the design. Throughout the process, the team was very accommodating, super nice, and patient with me.
SnapADU does the whole thing. I didn’t have the time or capacity to manage permitting myself or coordinate everything on my own. Once the permits were pulled, they mobilized literally within a few days. The process was smooth and fast. Every single person was beyond respectful and accommodating, and they allowed me to conduct my own independent inspections. Anything I brought up was addressed promptly.
What makes SnapADU different is its people. Their project attendants are literally there watching and inspecting everything on a daily basis. Their leadership listens, cares, and is super nice. But what really stood out to me was their ethics. At one point, I was refunded money for items that were not included or had been added inadvertently.
The founder is very bright and beyond professional. The team members I worked with were phenomenal, patient, and super knowledgeable. I would even see the site leads stay after hours working.
My advice to anybody: I did the homework for you — just go with SnapADU. You will not find better.“
