Steps On Toes, led by an instructor, offers dance lessons that are wonderful for total beginners, including couples preparing for their first dance. The instructor focuses on the fundamentals of leading and following rather than just teaching choreography to memorize. This approach helps students learn skills they can use for a lifetime. She is especially wonderful with beginners, and is patient, encouraging, and makes you feel comfortable from the very first lesson. Lessons are educational and fun, with a different focus each day and each day was serious business to nail the basics. The instructor guided students through how to learn, how to make mistakes, how to work together, and how to think about the roles of lead and follow. She also helped couples pick the perfect song and choreographed a simple but beautiful dance. She worked with the limitations of bodies and made the whole process special and easy. Many got lots of compliments on their first dance. This was one of the best investments made leading up to a wedding. The instructor is an excellent instructor and comes highly recommended.
We had 8 lessons with Laurie to prepare for our wedding first dance, and it was one of the best decisions we made. Instead of just teaching us choreography to memorize, she focused on the fundamentals of leading and following through the foxtrot. We now have skills we can use long after our wedding, which made the experience even more worthwhile.

Wonderful experience for total beginners with very little time to get something together. There was a different focus each day- and each day was serious business to nail the basics. A sweet gem that many locals would appreciate is that there is also a lot of history with this teacher and it was wonderful to learn about the dance scene in Oakland from way back when.
LaurieAnn was a great teacher for my fiance and I, total beginners, to learn east coast swing for our wedding dance. She didn't just teach us how to dance, she guided us through how to learn, how to make mistakes, how to work together, and how to think about the roles of lead and follow. Very educational and fun! I would definitely recommend working with her.
