Like many others, I had a terrible experience having my hair braided by Char. She was rude and unprofessional. I showed up early for my 8 am appointment only to find out that Char had changed my appointment 9 am by sending me and email at 11 pm at night. I thought it was inconsiderate, but I decided to move past it. I decided to grab coffee down the street while I waited for her to show. I returned at 9:10 am and she told me that I was late and that she was going to be charging me a late fee. She was incredibly rude the entire time, complaining about me, we argued several times, but because I was in real need to have my hair done I stayed. We sat in silence the entire time after that. Very uncomfortable experience. I would never go back to her.

SCAM Unfortunately I didn't find her yelp reviews until it was too late. I sent my deposit as requested for a 1pm appointment; she changed my appointment to 10am without consulting me, but I could still make it work. Day of, she texts me at 7:48 confirming me for 10. I respond at 8:40 with a yes. I arrive at 10 and text her to ask about the suite number and she says my appointment was cancelled for not confirming. Apparently I got an email at 8:41 with the cancellation, meaning she gave less than an hour to confirm for a morning appointment. When I sent her a photo with proof of my confirmation she stopped responding.

Like many of the reviewers here I was scammed by Char. She asked me to send a deposit for an appointment, and days later suddenly cancelled the appointment and refused to give me my money back. She has been doing this for years in Oakland, and is now opening up a business in Sunnyvale to scam more people out of their money. If you would like to file a complaint against Char with the California Board of Cosmetology, you can do so here: If you want to tell her potential new customers about her unprofessional and deceitful business practices you can leave a comment on her Instagram (@braidsbychar) and TikTok (@bayareasbestbraider). A group of people she has scammed will be filing a lawsuit against her next year, but if she has taken your money you can sue her individually through California small claims court: Char has been deleting comments by unhappy former customers, but the California Cosmetology Board and the law will catch up to her soon. I look forward to seeing Char in court.
