About Sunnyside Cemetery

Sunnyside Cemetery is a historic landmark and the second oldest burial ground in Long Beach. This peaceful cemetery features lawn burials and is adjacent to the Long Beach Municipal Cemetery. Visitors can drive or walk around the cemetery, which is also accessible by public transportation. The cemetery has a vintage charm, with gravestones and mausoleums dating back to the 1860s. Some visitors have reported paranormal experiences, including sightings of ghostly apparitions, such as the legend of the Ghostly Bride, Bessie McKensie Baxter, who was killed on her way to her wedding and is said to haunt the cemetery grounds. Despite these claims, others find the cemetery to be a serene and quaint spot to relax, read, or enjoy a picnic. The cemetery is open during the day, and occasionally hosts movie nights during the summer.

Excluding local people of importance, Sunnyside boasts a Civil War Medal Of Honor recipient and the fact that famed photographer, Ansel Adams, photographed the cemetery, especially the Rhea monument against the background of oil derricks back in the early 1930's

I love this cemetery. I’m surprised it isn’t a frequent scouting location for movies. I fell quite peaceful there.
