As the son of a military veteran with PTSD, I am deeply disappointed by the way this counseling practice treated my father.

My father was denied access to care over an unpaid bill that, in our view, should have been submitted to insurance. Despite providing insurance information and repeatedly raising concerns about billing, we were essentially told to resolve the issue ourselves while my father’s treatment was interrupted.

I had a very troubling experience with the office manager, Mary, at Self Care Counseling regarding their billing practices. Mary failed to bill my primary insurance and then automatically charged my card without going through my insurance first — which is improper billing practice. I have since contacted both of my insurance companies, and both have confirmed that the way she handled my billing was wrong.

To make matters worse, when she did reach out, it was on a Friday at 5pm, and she was cold and unprofessional — not the warm, empathetic communication you would expect from someone working in a mental health setting.
