United We Can (UWC) is a venerable organization that provides employment opportunities and dignity in work for people in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside (DTES). As a street charity that means business, UWC has successfully partnered with local businesses and residents to supply recycling services. The organization's depot is located in a slightly out-of-the-way but still accessible area with ample parking and public transportation options. The staff is known for providing good treatment to those who return their empties and are helpful in assisting with various types of recycling. They also offer hot coffee, snacks, and sometimes even sandwiches to those who may need it. UWC continues to employ DTES people for street cleaning and other tasks, upholding their mission statement to be a significant help to those in need. It is important to keep the Board of Directors honest and accountable to ensure the charity stays true to its mission.
I was GM at UWC from 2011 to 2018 and it was the most venerable organization that I was ever been apart of and run. The Binners deserve as much dignity and respect as any other customers bringing in recyclable beverage containers to any depot they use. The Binners at that time were also Employees giving DTES people Employment opportunities that would probably not have been available in traditional workplaces.. Things change. While I do not know that UWC continues to hire DTES people in the depot, they are absolutely still one of the best in employing DTES people for street cleaning etc..... There is dignity in work. Love this bottle depo . Its location is a bit out of the way but still accessible . They got tons of parking spots . And public transportation is on main Street and on terminal avenue . I always get good treatment here when i return my empties here .
Great place for most types of recycling . The staff are very helpful. Everything from the hot coffee to warm those that need it to even a decent sandwich or some other type of snack. I was quite impressed.. so don't hesitate to call the depot and get directions to the site.
