“This place used to have a different location and gave me great baits to kill attic rats about 15 years ago. But it moved and I never knew where it went. I really trusted them for stuff that worked. You buy different things from the grocery store, but it didn't seem as effective.

Hearing noises in the attic. I didn't know what, but suspected squirrels.

Went to a different place first due to the time of day and they had longer hours. They suggested it's a high percentage possibility that it's rats for this area. Bought an outside rat bait trap and some rat bait (poison) packets to toss around the attic.

DIY Pest Control was my second stop and I made sure to head out earlier this time. As soon as I saw their card, I realized this was the same place I had used years ago that gave me stuff that worked like a charm. And yes, they had those packets I used back then. Unlike the first place, they warned me to use gloves. If I don't, rats can smell the human on the bait and will avoid it. Why didn't the first place mention anything about that? I was handling the outdoor bait box and the bait I put in it with my bare hands. They leaned towards rats too. So all I bought was some of those rat baits I had used that worked.

I was a little suspicious though because it didn't sound like rats/mice. So I also bought a trail cam from a sporting goods store. Took a few days, 3 different camera positions, and adding lighting, but I finally caught the culprit. Or one culprit. A squirrel. Could be rats too and more squirrels. The rats have plenty of bait to get them. But there's no squirrel bait available. Not to poison them anyway.

Went back armed with knowing what enemy I was pursuing. This time the owner was there. She's very knowledgeable. She hooked me up with fox urine to scare them away. Told me that squirrels will probably avoid a trap near their nesting place (assuming they're nesting in my attic). And that I need to trap them outside. So I also picked up some squirrel bait (non poisonous, just a lure). So I will relocate my trap outside and then will relocate or kill them. Leaning towards kill. There are plenty of squirrels in wooded areas. Don't need overpopulation forcing them to become a problem for somebody else.

Poisoning squirrels is illegal because they're game animals in Texas. Don't want somebody killing them for food after the squirrel consumed poison and now the human gets poisoned from the meat. Killing them away from your home requires a hunting license. But killing them as pests on your property doesn't. I've seen a guy on youtube use a cornmeal/baking soda mix that's only deadly to rodents/squirrels. If that's all they have to eat (like being trapped in a cage), they will. The baking soda will produce gases that their bodies aren't built to release fast enough and it will build up and pop their digestive tract open, killing them. Haven't heard the squirrels for several days since the fox urine and haven't moved the trap from the attic yet. But will this weekend, planning to relocate it to the back yard and hopefully eliminate some of these pests.“
