Ms. Jelly Robinson of Peace & Love Studios is a professional on so many levels. My son is 2.5. He has autism and a speech delay. This was his fourth haircut, but the only one that didn’t leave feeling like a terrible mother. To begin with, Ms. Jelly sent a detailed survey to get to know my son before she met him. This not only gave needed information but gave me an opportunity to think through our previous experiences to better understand his needs. At the start of the haircut experience, there was no rush. Ms. Jelly allowed time for him to acclimate and observe the studio. During the haircut Ms. Jelly was paying attention, not only to his verbal protests and crying but watching how his body reacted to different sensations. I felt at ease even though my son was upset because she was paying as much attention to him, and the attention she was paying was meaningless. This was a safe experience even though it was difficult for him. She showed him the comb. She had salon based toys to simulate the vibrations of the clippers. He even calmed down for a bit and gave her a little eye contact during the first meeting. That level of rapport building ability, in such a short amount of time, is rare and special. Our first haircut of MANY! Ms. Jelly understands neurodivergence and create a safe and inviting space for our kids and young adults. We are grateful and can’t wait to see you again!
Today was our second time with Miss Jelly. We still have a ways to go, but it was much better than the other times we have tried to get his haircut. I love that she took the time to learn about him and ask what he likes/is interested in. And she didn't rush him through the haircut either. She goes at his pace. She had Paw Patrol and lollipops waiting for him when we walked in. And we learned last time that the clippers scare him so she tried just scissors this time. He was much more receptive. We highly recommend her and can't wait to see her next month!
Today was our first time getting a haircut by Miss Jelly & we will now never go anywhere else! Noah is almost 3 & a nonverbal ASD child with sensory issues so his first haircut wasn’t the best experience. We heard about Miss Jelly through a Facebook group & made an appointment right away! She’s mobile so she comes to you (which I think all of us parents can appreciate)! She had Noah’s favorite cartoon on & ready to go as well as MANY extra combs & a pair of play scissors to keep him occupied while getting his cut. The biggest thing was that she went at Noah’s speed. He wasn’t forced to sit in a chair or even to wear a cape, she made sure he was comfortable above all. She even goes as far as putting her sprayer of water next to the heater so it’s warm enough to the touch when it’s time for her to spray his hair. Those little details made our whole experience amazing & meant there were NO tears shed by Noah. I highly recommend Miss Jelly to anyone & she will be seeing us again in the near future! ❤️
