About Project Hand Up
Project Hand Up is a food supplemental program that provides groceries to working people and those receiving monthly checks, helping them avoid choosing between eating and paying bills. For $6, participants receive three bags of food: one with non-perishables, one with bread, pastry, and dairy, and one with frozen and meat items, when available. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the program offers curbside pickup. The program is open to everyone, with no requirements to shop. Volunteers are described as kind and helpful, and the food is donated by generous local vendors. While some items may be near or slightly beyond the expiration date, the program has consulted with the health department to ensure proper procedures. Participants often find a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and refrigerated items, which are rarely available at food pantries. Reviewers express gratitude for the program, with one physically disabled student and their family finding it a "blessing" that has helped them tremendously. Another reviewer, who sometimes volunteers, notes the hard work of the staff and the need for additional help, especially with the heavy lifting involved.
