It was hot and dry the day we went so we didn't see too many animals. We did see a herd of buffalo in the distance though.
Beautiful scenery. Nice drive through the park.

Some sunrises are beautiful… and then there are the ones that stop you in your tracks.
Watching the first light spill across the Wichita Mountains, with the sky painted in shades of gold, pink, and blue, was something I'll never forget. As the sun climbed higher, bison quietly grazed across the prairie, the lakes reflected every color in the sky, and the entire refuge seemed to come alive.
If you're planning a visit, get there early. The wildlife is most active in the morning, and the peacefulness of watching the day begin is worth every minute of lost sleep.

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is such a nice, low-key escape. The scenery is beautiful in a very natural way, rocky mountains, open fields, and big skies everywhere. It’s also super easy to encounter bison here,they roam freely, and seeing them up close is pretty awesome. We even spotted some longhorns casually wandering around too.
It’s a great place for an easy hike, a scenic drive, or just hanging out by the lakes. Not too crowded, not touristy, just peaceful and refreshing. Perfect if you want to get out of the city and enjoy some quiet time in nature without doing anything too intense.
