AXL Barber and Beauty of Tulsa. Lord help me I tried. I pulled in there Tuesday afternoon with hope in my heart and a coupon I found crumpled in the glove box from 2024. I hadn’t had a proper haircut since my nephew’s graduation last year and that wasn’t even a haircut, it was just my aunt Rhonda buzzin’ my neck with a dog trimmer while cryin’ about her third divorce. Anyway I walk in, I’m already nervous cause barbers make me feel judged like I’m about to be sentenced. The fella behind the chair had one of them perfect haircuts that makes you feel like your scalp should apologize for even bein’ alive, said his name was Jim. I sat down in that cracked-up vinyl chair and he said “Give me one sec.” That one sec turned into ten, then fifteen, and next thing I know I’m sittin’ there next to a 9-year-old gettin’ a skin fade sharper than my life choices. And right about minute twelve it all hit me. Like memory vomit. The time I got a bowl cut before church camp and the girls made fun of me so I faked heat stroke to go home early. The time I tried to bleach my own tips with lemon juice and ended up lookin’ like Guy Fieri’s sad cousin. The summer I got lice from a Greyhound seat and shaved my whole head with a rusty Bic in a motel sink while screamin’ to God. Then the clippers fired up and I panicked. I said “I’m good actually” and walked out like I forgot somethin’ in my truck. I sat in the front seat and stared across the street for twenty minutes tryin’ to feel alive. Ended up goin’ home, looked in the mirror, and shaved my own head with the same clippers I use on the dog. But I’ll say this, the place smelled nice. Like warm aftershave and mild disappointment. So yeah, I only stayed ten minutes and looked at a magazine I didn’t even understand, but I went home and shaved it myself. Still smelled like burnt rubber somehow. Kinda.
Went in today with my son and both got a cut from Cortez. Great environment, and great work. Recommend 100/10. We will definitely be coming back from now on!
