“I have nothing but good things to say about the medical staff at Atlantic Medicine & Wellness. The doctor and entire clinical staff were very friendly and professional and knowledgable and I'm very thankful. I unfortunately had a complication with my insurance carrier, Amerihealth, who advertised to me that I could take advantage of an annual wellness visit for no cost at an in-network facility and they recommended Atlantic Medicine. I rarely go to the doctor because of how complicated it has become with insurance these days but decided to take advantage of the preventative visit as it is designed to help us all get in front of a doctor to catch issues early on. For whatever reason the billing for my annual wellness visit became so complicated that I ended up in a year long process of phone calls and appeals processes with various billing departments and the insurance company at which point everyone left me holding the bag as though it was my fault. More than a year after the wellness visit I attempted to get more information about the contracts between the insurance company and the provider to further understand how this could have happened and finally received a response from someone at Atlantic that they, in fact, did make a mistake with sending my blood sample to the wrong lab which triggered an out-of-network balance bill. It was a relatively small amount of money but because I had double checked that I was going in for a free in-network annual wellness visit with both the insurance company and the provider before the visit I was not ok with the out-of-network balance bill in principle alone.

Don't let my story scare you off from this facility I am just hoping I can bring some attention to the problems in the industry as a whole. The communication between providers and insurance companies is seriously broken and we all need to work together to help fix it. Doctors and medical staff deserve to be paid fairly and the insurance companies are complicating all of it and are basically making everyone work very hard to get reimbursed to the point where they give up. As insurance gets more expensive and covers less with significantly higher deductibles the providers also need to take a little more responsibility and transparency with patient finances and helping us understand the costs of each procedure and process before we go through with any test or screening no matter how simple. And insurance companies need to provide more transparency with regards to standard operating procedures for simple annual wellness visits. It doesn't have to be this complicated and we shouldn't have to be bounced around from appeal to appeal for months on end to have a resolution.”
