The Plainsboro Preserve is a must-visit destination in Plainsboro, featuring many short and easy trails around a beautiful 50-acre lake called McCormack Lake. Visitors can enjoy fresh air and scenic lakeside views, making it an ideal spot for those seeking tranquility. The nature center provides a solid education aspect, with opportunities to spot wildlife such as deer, birds, and other creatures. Fall colors are particularly stunning, reflected across the lake. Maggie's Trail is a favorite spot, offering a uniquely peaceful vibe, but extra caution is needed near the water. The preserve spans over 1,000 acres of open space and is a popular spot for locals. One reviewer described it as their "stomping ground." The trails offer a variety of options, including the discovery of an old quarry and a classic loop suggestion that combines different colored trails for a total of about 4.6 miles. Hikers can also extend the route to about 5.5 miles by adding the Orange Trail for extra lakeshore views. Inside the nature center, visitors can use binoculars to observe the busy bird feeders and log their sightings. The preserve has a library and seating areas for those who want to relax and read. Overall, the Plainsboro Preserve is a beautiful and educational destination, offering a tranquil escape for families and casual hikers looking for a peaceful nature experience. Visitors should be aware that pets, bikes, fishing, swimming, and alcohol are not allowed, and the trails are open year-round, generally from early morning until around dusk. Some paths may have obstacles after heavy rain or strong winds, so appropriate footwear and insect repellent are recommended.
