“We relocated here in Barnegat way back in 1984. In those days there was only one barber shop in Barnegat to get a haircut. That place was Jack’s. Located at 707 West Bay Ave across from the Police station, Jack Pharo was the proprietor. At that time Jack had three chairs much as it is today. There were waiting chairs and then there was the “Chair” I called it the playboy chair. That one single chair had a small table that Jack had Playboy magazine’s face down of course. If you were not of age, Jack would yell at you to move. Every two weeks I would come in with my two boys and listen to the great stories Jack would talk about growing up here and in Manahawkin. Fishing on the RR trestle in Manahawkin, duck hunting in the bay, getting stranded on an island all night, deer hunting at the halfway fields, just great stuff. When Jack passed away, the shop, as you might expect, went downhill. Some of the hair cutters were bad, so I moved on. I went from one barber to another, never finding the atmosphere that Jacks had.Recently I joined the Barnegat VFW across the street from Jax at the old police station. Every Wednesday a small group of VETS (10-15) meet and have coffee and doughnuts. One day a beautiful woman came in to the meeting. What I discovered, this lovely woman is now the proprietor of what was Jack’s Barber Shop and keeping with tradition and honoring Jack Pharo, she named the shop JAX Solon. Her name is April. For Christmas April stopped in and gave all of us a free hair cut card WOW! What a surprise. So I just had to check this place out. Heck, the difference between a good hair cut and a bad haircut. Two weeks.So, I stopped in and two of the three chairs were occupied by woman, after all this is a Solon. I was offered coffee or a bottle of water, while I waited. Conversations were friendly and fun as the women styled hair. Then a young man arrived, Brian and I got a terrific haircut. I mean a really good haircut. Well that certainly changed my mind. I am back at Jack’s barber shop now. One thing though, no Playboy magazines.So, if you are looking for a good haircut at a historical building or a solon experience, JAX is the place to go. Prices are very reasonable, and the atmosphere is what one would expect at an old time Barber Shop.“
