JCCS in Helena charged my wife and me $5,715 to prepare and file our 1040 tax return with a schedule D and 2 state returns. The national average for a CPA to prepare this return is approximately $500. And so if you should choose to use JCCS you can expect to be charged greater than 10X the national average for tax preparation. Should you decide to discuss JCCS’ fees with them and they indicate that their fees are not as exorbitant as I have stated here, you might want to ask them a few questions:
How many different rates do they have? Who decides which customers get which rates? How do I know if I am getting the lowest rate?
Sad to say, but, I spent more than 3 times the amount I normally pay. Being recently retired I allowed the exorbitant price. (Paid more than I was initially quoted at the end.) Then fellow Veterans who were in my same situation were shocked I paid so much to have my taxes done. Long story short; I am now paying another CPA to redo and audit my taxes. They do not know all the rules and paperwork for Veterans. Paying 900 plus and then more in taxes that I'm not supposed to pay, as they do not understand Veterans and such, means, perhaps, as a vet do not go to them.
