1353 Heather St, Shakopee“My son has been attending Mr. Roell’s karate classes for seven months now, and I’ve seen such a positive transformation in him. He’s become more confident, focused, and disciplined, all thanks to the valuable lessons Mr. Roell teaches. Not only does he provide top-notch instruction on self-defense, but he also has a great sense of humor—his jokes keep the kids entertained while they’re learning. I highly recommend his classes to anyone looking for a fun yet structured way to build confidence and life skills!“

430 Pond Promenade, Chanhassen“We have been attending ATA since December and have seen tremendous improvement in our son. He is more focused, listens better, and has gained much more confidence in himself. Pranav would also like to mention that Ms. Gregg, Mr. Browne, and Ms. Lisa are wonderful with the kids and always encourage them to be their best.“

4532 Chicago Ave, Minneapolis“My kids and I have been going to MKG for over a year now. We tried a few other places before deciding on MKG. I was specifically looking for a place that had great coaching and skill development for youth. The youth coaches are fantastic and the curriculum hits on a lot of different skills and has both cardio and strength training components. The coaches are responsive, skilled, and create an environment of focused learning and fun for all levels. My kids like to practice their kali stick patterns together at home for fun without being asked. Also, the gym itself is very inclusive. I take an adult class while my kids have class, and because there are so many long-time students who are happy to teach newcomers the basics, it feels like a private lesson every time I go. Classes are both a physical and mental workout, so it’s a phenomenal way to forget about a stressful day at work. Another plus is they are really flexible with the membership. We took a break this winter because my kids were on a speedskating team, and it was very easy to pause the membership and pick up where we left off. We really enjoy being members of the MKG community.“

The coaches and students are incredible in both the jiu jitsu and Muay Thai classes. I also love the CLA training style, I feel myself leveling up so much faster. Super thrilled to have started training here!“

My younger child is building focus and confidence, while my older one is growing stronger and more disciplined every week. We love the positive, family-friendly atmosphere. Highly recommend!“

7387 Bush Lake Rd #2, Edina“I've been training BJJ for about 14 years, and was visiting family and dropped in for a couple weeks. Excellent gym and I strongly recommend checking them out. Everyone is friendly and instructors are very knowledgable. Depending on what you're after, rounds can be casual or competitive. As well, the upper belts were all nice and helpful. I had the opporunity to roll with some black belts and got wrecked every time. 10/10 experience“

“I've trained at AKS for nearly 20 years. The first 10 years were as a child and teenager, where I was able to learn Tae Kwon Do and its associated behaviors of discipline, focus, persistence, and self-confidence. Moving back to the Minnetonka area many years later, I enrolled my 3 kids here and each have had the same physical and mental benefits I experienced. It has been amazing for my kids to train under the same instructor that I trained with in my youth. For myself, I thoroughly enjoy the continued journey in my TKD learning, and it's a great workout as well! I am so grateful for American Karate Studio!“

9012 Lyndale Ave S, Bloomington“My entire family (two grade school kids, my husband, and me) have been going here for about six months, and it's really enriched our lives and improved our health. This school fosters community really well, and I feel like we're all in it together, helping each other pursue our goals.Personally speaking, I'm forty years old and have some chronic health issues. That I'm able to study martial arts with my family alongside twenty-year-old men in peak health speaks to this school's ability to encourage people to grow from wherever they are in life. It has also been a blast learning martial arts as a family (a feat only allowed thanks to this school's pricing structure). I'm able to have fun with my kids while we learn, and sparring with my husband feels like date night.Having never studied martial arts before, I can't compare this place to anywhere else, but here are a few of the things I find striking...The school uses a volunteer format for their instructors. It helps keep the costs low--nowhere else I called could compete with their price--but it also creates a built in sense of comradery. Instructors teach for passion, not a paycheck, and have a personal investment in your success. The instructors rotate on different nights, and students are able to learn from multiple perspectives.Teachers are actively invested in your success regardless of your belt color, but they also care that your belt color *means* something. Students are not bumped up from level to level to make them feel good (you won't find any twelve-year-old black belts here), but as a signifier of knowledge and advancement. It makes this a great place to learn for both beginners and those who are already serious about martial arts.On one recent Thursday night, our two kids received focused instruction in self-defense from a four-time kickboxing world champion, while my husband and I went through our one-steps (a kind of belt-level-based series of movements) with the school's lead teacher. In the background, another black-belt helped students go through form. It all felt so personalized and thoughtful, and I feel privileged to be part of it.This place, in a strip mall basement with aging carpet, is a hidden gem. Give it a try.“

5417 Nicollet Ave, Minneapolis“We have twin boys going to Kindergarten in Richfield. We looked at *lots* of after-school options and are so glad we went with Hwa Rang Do. The kids enjoy getting better at martial arts — it's so fun to see them practicing their moves at home, and they felt so proud when they graduated to the next belt color. And the portion of the program that isn't martial arts is exactly what we wanted in an after-school program: the instructors are great with the kids, and find a balance between letting them goof off and get out energy and keeping the environment calm and organized. Every time we pick up the kids they're in the middle of some creative new art or craft, from making gingerbread houses to making their own "swords" from cardboard to beading and sculpting. I really like the physical space too — lots of board games, art supplies, and books, as well as foosball, an aquarium, and couches to just hang out. We highly recommend this program! Thanks to all the staff!“
