I highly recommend Mainely Rat Rescue! I called almost every rescue and small animal veterinary hospital/clinic looking for help with a sick, very scared, but sweet rat I took in a little over a month ago. No one could offer any help or numbers until I found out about MRR. I did a form (which was very detailed and informative, something I loved) for my boy and got a response for him to be placed with a foster faster than I thought it would be. I was going to be able to drive to bring him to someone but then the car that was going to be used broke and was unable to drive. They kindly found volunteers to come and pick him, his cage, toys, and such and bring him to his loving foster. The woman who picked him up was super sweet and made me feel better about giving him up to be passed over a few times before getting to his foster (I overthink a lot about stressing him out and such after everything he’s been through with his past owner). Everyone on the email thread were overly supportive and made it shown how much they care about the work they do. I was even offered to get updates about him which is really thoughtful, even thought I’m giving him up for better care then what I am able to give and have him be with someone with more experience they understand that I still care about him deeply and will think about how he’s doing/settled in. Thank you to everyone who helped my poor boy, and to anyone looking to work with MRR in anyway (adopting/fostering/volunteering/ and surrendering) please do! I can’t say how grateful I am to know he is going to get love and care from people with experience and not just given to anyone. Animals get one life and you always want the best for them for that life, especially rats with their short life span and being so misunderstood. MRR is a great way to do so with your rattle(s). I can’t thank everyone enough.

These people do amazingly wonderful work. They screen applicants carefully to be sure their rats are placed in a loving home. Their fosters dedicate so much knowledge, time, energy, money to ensuring abandoned rats are cared for and new babies are socialized and healthy. Rats are such misunderstood creatures and need more people looking out for them.

They are very thorough in their vetting (no pun intended) of adopters.
