“June 2nd, 10:50 am. I walk into the mausoleum of pain, the pit of despair. I’m greeted cheerfully and happily by two women behind the counter. Oh, but I’m on to them. That’s just a way of trying to distract me from the pain that I know is coming. I sign in and wait with increasing trepidation. Soon my name is called, and I’m escorted back to the torture chamber. Sarah Palmer, the evil henchman, throws another psychological barb at me by quietly and gently asking to sit in the chair of doom. Soon the sadistic Dr. Christian Duncan walks in, and “says open your mouth”. Trying to appease my tormenter, I comply. I prepare for the numerous shots that I know are coming. He shoots me up three times. Just three times? Just what kind of sadistic game is this Dr. playing? Afterwards, he says “I’ll be back in 15 minutes.” The evil henchman, Sarah Palmer, puts this contraption over my face to gas me. I know it’s just to relax me so that I don’t bolt and go screaming out the door in abject terror, it worked. I was rendered helpless. Fifteen minutes later Dr. Christian Duncan walks back in and pulls out the instruments of torture. He tells me to open my mouth, and he starts grinding away. My teeth are just shattering, and the pieces are flying all over the place. Meanwhile, the dental assistant, Sarah Palmer, whose job it is to remove the water and blood from your drowning soon to be corpse and rip your tongue right out of your mouth with that devasting suction wand of horror. Trust me, typically if you are not bleeding enough, they rectify the situation by jamming it deeper into your cheeks, gums, or throat. Until you’re spewing blood like a Quentin Tarantino movie. Wait, something is wrong. Where Is the taste of blood and the tongue pulling? When is it coming?... It never came. She was amazing! She was gentle and kind. But the doctor will definitely make up for her oversight. The dentist is working and grinding away. I know the pain is coming. Sure as heck, he hits that one tooth that is tender, causing me to jump and flinch. He says, “Kind of tender?” I answer, “yes”. I waited for the evil laugh, “bwa-ha-ha”. Cuz, I knew he would just continue on, but instead without hesitation or a sigh of frustration, he turned to his evil henchman and said, “shoot him up again, let’s make sure he is numb.” Wait, What? You mean he’s actually trying not to hurt me? This doctor definitely missed the ‘How to maximize the pain class.’ When he returns and starts drilling, I don’t feel anything. What a wonderful doctor! What kind of crazy dental shop is this? Where they actually care if you’re hurting, they are very gentle and they are nice? In 50+ years of my life I have only experienced that kind of Professional Dentistry twice. Dr. Christian Duncan and Sarah Palmer at Southern Family Dentist were remarkable!“
