I ended up needing a drywall ceiling professionally removed after water damage led to the unwelcome surprise of asbestos testing—and the joint compound came back positive at just 2%. It was a small amount, but enough that the company doing the original work couldn't proceed until it was professionally abated.
If you've ever suddenly found yourself in a situation like this, you know how overwhelming it can be. You're already dealing with water damage, then you're hit with an unexpected asbestos issue, and suddenly you're trying to figure out what needs to happen next while getting estimates that are all over the place. I received quotes from other companies that were more than TWICE what SMART charged for the same project.
That's one of the things that impressed me most about this company: they didn't see my situation as an opportunity to charge me whatever they thought they could get away with.
Jerry came out to look at the project and was completely upfront about what needed to be done, what didn't need to be done, and what it would cost. He got an estimate to me quickly and was just an all-around great guy. He actually reminded me so much of my grandfather, who was a mechanic for 40 years—blue collar, down-to-earth, honest, and someone who genuinely seemed more interested in helping people than squeezing every possible dollar out of them. We even ended up standing in my driveway chatting and having a few good laughs. I immediately felt like I was dealing with someone I could trust.
Then there's Marie, who was equally fantastic. She got the contract to me quickly, patiently answered all of my questions, and had absolutely no problem correcting a few minor details in the paperwork that most people probably wouldn't have even noticed—but my Type A self absolutely did. 😂 She was responsive, helpful, and wonderful to work with throughout the entire process.
And the crew—Patrick, Jerry (a different Jerry!), and Alexis—was just as impressive. They worked FAST, but they were also incredibly conscientious about my home and property. They answered all of my questions about the process, explained what they were doing, and when they finished, they walked through the room with me to show me exactly what had been done and patiently answered even more questions.
Every single person I dealt with was professional, knowledgeable, friendly, and genuinely NICE. When you're dealing with something unexpected and stressful like water damage and asbestos, having people treat you with kindness, patience, honesty, and respect means more than I can put into words.
SMART Environmental Services made an incredibly stressful situation so much easier, did excellent work, and charged a fair and reasonable price when they very easily could have taken advantage of the circumstances.
