For years we had a sewer smell in our basement, especially on cold days. We had had other plumbers out, but they just told us to pour water down the floor drain. That didn't help. So this winter, I thought I would try just one more time. I called on a very cold day, and the plumber came (I think his name was Roy) within 20 minutes, discovered a cause that had not been mentioned before (frozen air vent on the roof), but there was nothing to be done except wait for warmer weather. I accepted that.But then he looked around the basement some more. "Do you have any open pipes, I wonder?" he asked. I was about to say no, we had looked everywhere, but decided not to say anything until he had checked again. Imagine my surprise when he said "You have an open pipe!" It wasn't in the floor, which was where we had been looking, it was higher up. I don't know why it was open, but he capped it in a few seconds, and the job was done. The smell is gone.
