About Royal Caribbean, Liberty of the Seas
Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas, a Freedom-class cruise ship, began welcoming 3,634 passengers in 2007, making it the largest cruise ship at the time. The ship last underwent major renovations in 2016. The check-in process was efficient, and the cabin, though dated, had an oversized window that provided a pleasant wake-up call each morning. While the room had some limitations, such as a weak water pressure and occasional toilet issues, these could be managed with some planning. The heart of the ship is the Royal Promenade, a lively indoor shopping and dining area that spans multiple decks, creating an airy and open atmosphere. Passengers can also explore the ship's other amenities, including the Royal Casino, pool deck, sports courts, water slides, and mini-golf course. The ice rink, though less prominent, is still available for those who seek it out. Overall, the Liberty of the Seas offers a diverse range of activities and dining options, making it an excellent choice for families, couples, and value-conscious cruisers. The Coco Cay private island was particularly well-received. With its combination of affordability and variety, the Liberty of the Seas is a recommended option for both first-time and seasoned cruisers.
We enjoyed a 3 night cruise to Bahamas. We visited Nassau and Coco Cay.
You can tell that the ship is not new, but it is in a good condition and it is very clean. They have a really nice app that helps you to track all the events around the ship but be aware... If you don't purchase internet access, the app is not going to work. There is no free wifi.
The food its ok, You have a descent Buffet that opens for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You also have a formal restaurant that is included (make sure that you do your reservation)
We encountered some issues with the food. At the formal restaurant, the meat was room temperature and hard, the vegetables wore almost...read full review
Royal Caribbean Freedom-class Liberty of the Seas, began taking on 3,634 passengers in 2007, making it the largest cruise ship in the world at that time. The last time it endured major renovations was 2016. My brother and I took a 4 night Bahamas cruise from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale near the end of April '24. It was a second of a back-to-back (different ship with a 1 night layover), so was able to take a shuttle from our overnight hotel for a later check-in. The check-in process was as good I've experienced, and we were in our cabin by 1:30 pm. We had an oversized window cabin, and it was nice to have the sun wake me up every morning. The room was fine, but just consider it's been 15 years since this cabin was considered best in class, so a lot of things we take for granted was lacking (e.g. only outlets at desk so needed an extension cord to let my CPAP machine reach the bed, really weak water pressure and periodic periods when the toilet wouldn't flush, only one liquidshower soap....supposed to be used as both body wash and shampoo, no way to plug up the sink to do hand laundry, lack of hooks to hang things). A lot of these could be handled with a bit of planning (i.e. bring your own extension cord, bring your own sink plug and shampoo, magnetic hooks)...which I partially did. The TV in the room was flat screen, not allowing you to accept any external inputs (which is typical on cruise boats)...it did use a very heavy duty pivoting TV mount...I wonder how heavy the previous TV was. It has the standard cruise channels, including 3 sports channels (Sky, ESPN, ESPN2) and 3 news channels (BBC, MSNBC, FOX). There was no movies on demand. Our attendant was Putu, who serviced our room once a day. Normally, we just asked for a switch-out of towels if we were in the room, to keep things easy. Mandatory gratuities are now $18 per person per night on RC, paid on your onboard account. Good service by your room steward deserves additional tip, directly. The heart of the ship is the Royal Promenade, a series of shops and restaurants on Deck 5 that is the main highway for the ship...if you want to go from one end of the ship to the other, you would most likely take this. It is more than 4 stories high, which gives it a very airy open feeling. The best way to describe is that it is like the indoor shopping centers connected to the giant casinos in Las Vegas. The other indoor option to go from one end to another is Deck 4, which houses the Royal Casino. Deck 11 is the pool deck and is the outdoor option to go across. We really didn't do much inside the ship (no shows), but did do some gambling (bingo at the Star Lounge, table games for my brother at the casino). I did spend the last day wandering around the ship by myself to see (and photograph) the things I hadn't seen on this trip. These included: Flowrider on Deck 13 (a wave simulator which continues to be really popular...for me, just a recipe for pulling/tearing something); Sports courts for basketball, pickleball; water slides, mini golf course, library room (pretty empty...of people and books), card room (a lot of different board games...and somebody is replenishing those playing cards); the online room where you can get internet connectivity on your own laptop or borrow a desktop with printers. I did try to find the ice rink on the boat, and it seems like it still exists (on deck 3, called the Platinum theater)...you are only going to find it if actively looking for it, and it was closed on the final day. One can't miss the pools and solarium: didn't have a chance to try but they were always busy. The things I did try, I wrote separate write-ups for. Overall we really enjoyed this cruise, and am glad that because this is an older RC ship, the prices are quite low compared to the newer ones. Coco Cay is absolutely worth going to. With that combination, I would recommend LIberty to any value-hunting cruiser (first timers to veterans).
Excellent midsize ship with something for everyone. Main Dining has a great selection and if you’re up for something a little different there are also several specialty restrooms on board. Great for families, couples, or anyone looking for an all inclusive vacation.
