About Yantic Cemetery
Yantic Cemetery is a well-maintained historic site, representing a 'who's who' of Norwich citizens from the 1800s, from merchants and physicians to the average person. It was designed as a typical Victorian era park, once featuring a large fountain and large oak and maple trees throughout, though the fountain is gone and the trees were removed after the 1938 hurricane. The cemetery is rich with terrific stonework and statuary, offering a great place to take a stroll. It is a peaceful and historical spot right next to William Backus Hospital, featuring an unusual auditorium section with tomb stones in three layers. Visitors can walk from the hospital through an open gate. While some tombstones have fallen over, the cemetery remains a beautiful and wonderfully peaceful spot to explore, with people walking dogs and enjoying the area. It provides a rich historical experience, prominently featuring events like the Spanish Civil War on its stones.
Well maintained by Norwich Public Works the cemetery is virually a 'who's who' of Norwich citizens during the 1800's. If you were a merchant, politician, public service official, physician right down to the average joe this was usually the place you were laid to rest.At one time the circle at the far right of the map contained a large fountain. The entire cemetery had large oak and maple trees throughout and was designed as a typical Victorian era park. Sadly the fountain is long gone and the 1938 hurricane ravaged the trees to the point the city removed them.Great place to take a stroll and if you're a tombstone tourist it's rich with terrific stonework and statuary

This cemetery is right next to William Backus Hospital. I had passed it couple times and was curious. So after work one day I drove in and parked my car to check it out. I saw people walking their dogs and couples with babies enjoying the beautiful day so I decided to walk the whole thing. So much history on the tomb stones! Even the Spanish Civil War is featured prominently. There's an unusual auditorium section closest to the hospital where the tomb stones are in three different layers leading down to a low ditch. Wonder what that means. I went back a few times since it was such a peaceful and historical experience. There's actually an open gate between the emergency department and the cemetery so I was able to walk right over at lunch. Truly a beautiful spot to explore. I said a few prayers for those that have passed as I walked around. I even tried to lift up a few of the fallen tombstones, but they were very heavy. That's my only complaint. Some of those loved ones have fallen over and can't get up. Aside from that it's wonderfully peaceful.
