I am so grateful to have come across Dr. Cappoziello. As someone who’s been dealing with anxiety and insomnia for years, and having had failed experiences with sleep therapy, I was initially skeptical about this brain training practice called biofeedback. I decided to give it a try, as one tool to work on panic and anxiety management, in addition to my meditation and yoga practice and in parallel with behavioral therapy and as an alternative to going the stress and headache meds route. One challenge for me had been to find tools that are sustainable outside of a specialist’s chair and that are able to continue to be effective beyond the session, something I’ve found more challenging, for example to extrapolate from the otherwise very effective acupuncture alone. However, after about a handful of sessions focused on deep belly breathing as well as active brain training, I have actually started to experience brain clarity and focus, an awareness I have not felt like I’ve been able to access for years. I’m also feeling more able to control slowing down and “catching myself” being calm and composed, even in situations normally stressful for me, such as driving. There is less reactivity and impulsivity and more of a moment to take a breath and to access rational thinking in these instants of sudden and unexpected, stressful triggers. As an aside, I also appreciate Dr. C’s cheerful attitude that’s able to put me at ease and that feels like I’m chatting with a friend in her lounge, rather than some scary clinical place. In the end, it’s our own bodies and brains doing the work, and that’s been my impetus to explore these integrative, sometimes dubbed alternative medicine, approaches. Science is very fact based, and I’m a big fan; but emotional and mental health continue to present more as black hole in neuroscience, with much yet to be studied. For me, I assessed the benefits and risks and decided that it was worth trying. If anxiety has been troubling, and for folks who are averse to traditional anxiety medication for whatever reason and instead want to maximize natural treatment, biofeedback, which works by stimulating different parts of our brain, may well be worth exploring.
